I grew up in this locals-only haunt. Nestled between Millcreek Canyon and the foot of Mt. Olympus, it's entrance is elusive, tucked deep in suburbs up windy, narrow roads. The north and south side of the canyon stand in stark relief from one another. The north being more arid, spending much of the day in direct sunlight, home to more cliffs, scrub oak, and shrubs than shade providing trees. The south side is hidden in a dense canopy of larger oak, spruce, and pine, fed by seasonal streams and shaded by the monolith of the Gods beneath which they reside.
This one little canyon, like the state in which is resides, provides much natural diversity from end to end and top to bottom. Established trails are only suggestions as they split and wind through relics of mans early efforts to extract minerals and harvest the sweet, unsullied mountain waters. Crumbling cement pipes and occasional odd bits of iron echo the scurrying feet creatures comfortable in natures dominance as it reclaims man made impermanence.
